Swelling - the medical term is edema - has many different causes. In some instances, swollen legs can sign that something is indeed wrong.

 

Swollen joints could be an indication that you've sat in one position for too long, are experiencing premenstrual changes, are pregnant, or are consuming too much salt. If you notice any unusual changes, let yourself be examined to rule out more serious problems and protect yourself.

 

In physical terms, swelling occurs through blood vessels (known as capillaries) when fluid escapes. The fluid builds up in the surrounding tissue, resulting in swelling.

Edema puts an extra strain on your heart and kidneys, which can affect you in the long run.

Therefore it is better to take the situation seriously and have the edema controlled - as early as possible.

 

1. Get active

Once you've had your doctor's check-up, it's time to get going.

The best weapon in the fight against water in the legs is a straightforward one: walking. When you move your legs, the blood circulation improves, and the leaked fluid can flow back. There are many returns to using an elliptical cross trainer or treadmill, but you can also combine walking exercises in the gym with a walk outside.

 

In our clubs, you can keep an eye on the distance and control the number of inclines. It's best to start with a 30-minute workout three or four times a week. You can then add five minutes to your activity every week (and increase the incline). It guarantees a slow build-up.

 

2. Exercises against swelling

 

There are several brilliant exercises against water retention in the tissue in addition to walking or running training. Do this a rare times a day until you can see improvement.

Leg Raises: Hold on to a chair and lift and extend one leg backward - keep the knee extended. Repeat this exercise as often as your doctor has agreed.

3. Feet up

4. Massage

 

Please discuss this with your doctor first, but as soon as they agree, treat yourself to a massage, as this can stimulate your lymphatic system.

6. Drink more water

That strength sounds like a flaw in terms, but drinking water helps against water in tissue. It boosts the body's excretory systems enormously and removes any waste accumulated in the body.

 

Hydration also has other benefits: you will be more focused and energized. Drink eight to ten large glasses of water a day. It is best to empty your recommended daily amount of water into a jug and keep it in the refrigerator. This way, you see exactly how much water you should drink. For a better taste, add lemons, oranges, limes, or cucumbers.

 

7. The power of plants

 

Natural diuretics are a gentle and healthy way of allowing the tissues' fluid to flow back.

Try diuretic herbs like dandelion, licorice root, and elderberry, or increase your celery, artichokes, grapes, and parsley intake. Green tea and cranberry juice are great alternatives to water - if you prefer multiple flavors.

 

 

8. Increase potassium levels

In addition to the tissue fluid, diuretics can unfortunately also remove potassium in the body, so you should take this nutrient as a supplement and increase your consumption of bananas, raisins, and kidney beans. These foods are all naturally high in potassium.

 

9. Take a full bath

Epsom salts are brilliant and time-tested remedies and anything but a wives' tale. Pour warm (not too hot) water into the tub, add a handful of Epsom salt and relax.
